There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Siemens’ Ulrich Münz presents “Industrial Autonomous Systems: Vision and State of the Art” as part of the IRIM Robotics Seminar Series. The event will be held in the Technology Square Research Building (TSRB) Auditorium from 11 a.m.–noon and is open to the public.

Abstract

This talk outlines key features of future autonomous systems in diverse fields of applications ranging from industrial manufacturing to transportation and energy systems. Moreover, several examples are presented that show the state of the art of autonomous systems at Siemens. Some of these examples are on an early research level; others are part of existing products. Based on these examples, key areas for future research are discussed.

Bio

Ulrich Münz is head of the Autonomous Systems Research Group at Siemens Corporate Technology in Princeton, N.J. Prior to this appointment, he was a senior key expert research scientist for power system stability and control at Siemens Corporate Technology in Munich, Germany. Münz has developed distributed, robust, and optimal automation and control technologies for autonomous systems for more than ten years.

Münz received his Ph.D. degree in Automatic Control from the University of Stuttgart, Germany in 2010, and MSc degrees in Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications from the Universities of Stuttgart, Germany, and Madrid, Spain, both in 2005. He received the EECI European Ph.D. Award on Embedded and Networked Control in 2010. From 2010 to 2011, he was a systems engineer at Robert Bosch GmbH.

His main research interests are autonomy technologies based on model- and data-driven methods for applications like industrial manufacturing, power systems, and transportation management.
