Lessons from Nature: Utilizing Hydrogen Bonds in Metal-Mediated Transformation
Hydrogen bond networks proximal to metal centers stabilize and direct chemistry performed by metalloenzymes. With inspiration from enzymes, we have utilized an approach that incorporates intramolecular hydrogen bond networks to determine their effects on the stability and reactivity of synthetic metal complexes. Our premise is that control of secondary coordination sphere via hydrogen bonds will promote new function in synthetic metal complexes. This talk will describe our most recent efforts to prepare organic frameworks that create hydrogen bond networks proximal to bound metal ion(s). The reactivity of manganese and iron complexes with dioxygen will be highlighted. Our systems have produced new dioxygen-derived intermediates that shed light into the initial events of metal-mediated dioxygen activation.
