There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Nano-Space Two-Dimensional Charge Polarization Induced at Interface between Monatomic-Layered Cluster Disk and Solid Surface
Physical Chemistry Seminar Series
Aiming to educe novel functions from clusters on the basis of their fundamental properties such as electron confinement, variety of atomic arrangements, etc., one can enhance these specific properties by interactions with a solid surface. We have discovered in our STM measurements [1-4] that a negative electric charge are accumulated at the interface between a monatomic-layered close-packed platinum cluster disk and a silicon surface, while a positive one is confined but delocalized in the cluster disk [3]; the cluster impact [5] was employed for the preparation of the samples having uni-size clusters [1]. This two-dimensional charge polarization in a nano-space induces a strong electric field in a molecular size, leading to cluster-specific catalytic and photoelectric activities. This cluster-surface system reveals low-temperature activation of O2
