Attendees will have an opportunity to hear about key trends and shifts in the marketplace that have seen buoyant activity despite the global economic downturn. These trends drawn from extensive market research data, and McGraw-Hill Construction Dodge data are already showing shifts that will affect the future of construction when the economy picks up and construction activity increases again. The talk will focus on ongoing global industry trends surrounding BIM processes, prefabrication and modular construction, and green building covering new building and retrofit and renovation. Mr. Bernstein will also present the forecasted total construction Outlook starts data and discuss workforce and skill shortages and green jobs that are likely to increasingly impact construction. Policy trends related to construction and infrastructure projects will be highlighted as well as other key trends transforming the global industry such as mitigating risk through design/build and integrated project delivery, public-private partnerships, and the use of smarter materials.

About Harvey M. Bernstein
As vice president of Industry Insights and Alliances, Harvey M. Bernstein leads the company’s thought leadership and green building initiatives and manages its market research group and partnerships with industry associations. Harvey speaks globally on construction industry and green building trends and has moderated and presented hundreds of speeches and written numerous papers covering innovation and technology, residential and commercial construction, energy efficiency, disaster mitigation, BIM, industry forecasts, and sustainability in the built environment. He is a member of The McGraw-Hill Companies’ Sustainability Business Development Board and is recognized as a creative thinker who is sought by clients to participate in strategic brainstorming sessions.
Harvey was a key member of the team that launched McGraw-Hill Construction’s award-winning GreenSource: The Magazine of Sustainable Design, and he co-authored the book Solving the Innovation Puzzle: Challenges Facing the U.S. Design and Construction Industry. In addition, he created the MHC global SmartMarket Report series on key industry trends on such topics as Building Information Modeling (BIM), public private partnerships, retrofit and renovation, water efficiency, industry productivity and innovation, cities of the future, and sustainability in the built environment.
Prior to joining McGraw-Hill Construction, Harvey served as president and chief executive officer of the Civil Engineering Research Foundation (CERF) and the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC), where he managed offices and business development in South Africa, Europe, China, India, Philippines, and Thailand. Harvey serves as co-chair of the National Building Museum’s Industry Council for the Built Environment; is a member of the Princeton University Civil & Environmental Engineering Advisory Council; and Underwriter laboratories Environment, Inc. Advisory Council. He is a visiting professor with the University of Reading’s School of Construction Management and Engineering in London, England, where he also serves on their Innovative Construction Research Center Advisory Board.
Harvey has an M.B.A in marketing from Loyola College; an M.S. in engineering from Princeton University; and a B.S. in civil engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
