Being one of the nerve centers of the current social and economic strains in France, the department of Seine-Saint-Denis (93) is often referred to as a typical example of the problems surrounding underprivileged suburb. A far cry from the preconceived ideas associated with this department, aggravated by the 2005 riots, Yamina Benguigui provides a historical perspective for this social debate.
