Alumnus Bill George (IE 1964, Honorary PhD 2008) has released a new book entitled True North Groups: A Powerful Path to Personal and Leadership Development, written with co-author Doug Baker, president of True North Groups Institute. This book extends the ideas of the previously released True North to describe the importance of having a small intimate group of peers in your life who support each other in challenging times, and to help each other develop as human beings and as leaders through honest conservations in confidential settings.

True North Groups contains in-depth ideas about forming your group, developing its norms, handling difficult group situations, and creating a high-performing group.  It also includes an extensive resource manual that outlines how to form a group of your own, along with a complete set of program ideas.

“Doug and I have both benefited from participating in two True North Groups over the years.  One is a men’s group that has meet weekly for the past 36 years and the other is a couple’s group that has met for 28 years,” said George.

George is a professor of management practice at Harvard Business School where he teaches leadership and leadership development. He has incorporated the True North Group into his courses at the Harvard Business School, where they have had significant impact on the MBA students and mid-career executives who have participated in them. True North Group members have shared the small group principles with participants in such organizations as the Young Presidents Organization Forum, Spirit Search, and Masterminds.

In addition to this recent publication, George is the author of the best-selling books:  7 Lessons for Leading in Crisis, True North: Discovering your Authentic Leadership, Finding Your True North (workbook), and Authentic Leadership.

George is the former chairman and CEO of Medtronic, and currently serves on the boards of ExxonMobil and Goldman Sachs. He is also a trustee of Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the World Economic Forum USA. He has made frequent appearances on television and radio, and his articles have appeared in numerous publications. He has been named one of “Top 25 Business Leaders of the Past 25 Years” by PBS.
