Perhaps at the moment you realize you’ve set the microwave for 30 minutes instead of 30 seconds, you’ve wondered to yourself what it might look like if the room you’re standing in were suddenly set aflame.

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) will answer that burning question on Wednesday evening with iPrevent, its annual Mock Dorm Room Fire. On Fowler Street, between Ferst Drive and 4th Street, a replica dorm room will be set aflame to the public. Perhaps as hot as the fire itself will be free Papa John’s pizza, Coke products and T-shirts as long as they last, for those who participate in four of the eight activities set up around the event.

WREK radio will DJ a scorching sampling of music at the event. Vehicles from Atlantic Station’s Fire Station 11 and Georgia Fire Sprinkler Association will demonstrate fire extinguishing and sprinkler systems. A narrated fire investigation tour of the burned dorm room replica will be given to show what signatures are left behind after a fire occurs.

Georgia Insurance and Fire Safety Commissioner Ralph Hudgens will present a state proclamation declaring that Georgia recognizes September as National Campus Fire Safety Month.

Previous mock dorm fires have shown that a dorm room can ignite and burn in three minutes; if your curiosity is sizzling, the dorm room will be lit at 6:30 p.m. with events following along Fowler Street.
