Another Use For Your Phone: Augmented Reality

*********************************
There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Computer-enhanced views of the world are not just available to cyborgs in science-fiction movies. Increasingly they can be found on cell phones, for free or on the cheap, through augmented reality applications that take advantage of the phones' GPS and compass features and access to high-speed wireless networks to mash up super-local Web content with the world that surrounds you. Associate Professor Blair MacIntyre of the Augmented Environments lab hopes the AR reality can live up to the hype.
