First launched by Workman Publishing in 1995, National Employee Appreciation Day falls on the first Friday of March and is designed to remind employers to acknowledge and praise their employees.

Employees are integral to the Institute’s mission and vision. It is important to take the time to show how much they are appreciated, and to recognize their efforts and their ongoing commitment to our collective values. According to a recent O.C. Tanner study, 79% of employees who quit their jobs cite a lack of appreciation as a key reason for leaving. Showing appreciation doesn’t have to cost much, and in turn helps create a more engaged, motivated, and productive workforce.

From students to managers to colleagues to senior leaders, everyone can play a role in making this year’s Employee Appreciation Day on Friday, March 3, a special occasion that makes Tech employees feel valued.

Georgia Tech Human Resources (GTHR) has developed an online guide to spark ideas for appreciating peers, employees, teams, and student workers to contribute to a successful Employee Appreciation Day within each unit. Check out the resource here and keep in mind, this isn’t the only day you can show gratitude to Tech employees. The Institute provides many programs to recognize colleagues on a daily or annual basis.

"It is so important to personalize recognition to meet the needs and preferences of each individual. Some employees may appreciate public praise while others may not. Some may be on campus to receive a visit from Buzz, treats in the break room, or a handwritten note, while others may not. Tailor your approach to fit the needs of your team. There are so many ways to say thank you," said GTHR's Recognition Program Manager Mattie Smyth.

Contact Smyth for more information about these recognition programs and ways you can express gratitude for employees throughout the year.
