ECE Professors Wenshan Cai and Stanislav Emelianov.Wenshan Cai and Stanislav Emelianov have been elected SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, Fellows for 2023. Cai is a professor in the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), with a joint appointment in Materials Science and Engineering. Emelianov is the Joseph M. Pettit Chair in ECE and a Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar.
Each year, SPIE promotes members as new Fellows of the Society. This year’s cohort of 83 new SPIE Fellows have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics, and imaging. They are honored for their technical achievement and for their service to the general optics community and to SPIE in particular.
Cai has been a member of the ECE faculty since 2012. His research is in the area of nanophotonic materials and devices, in which he has made a major impact on the evolving field of plasmonics and metamaterials. He has published more than 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and the total citations of his recent papers have reached approximately 20,000 within the past 10 years. Cai is the author of “Optical Metamaterials: Fundamentals and Applications,” which is used as a textbook or a major reference at many universities around the world.
Emelianov is the director of the Ultrasound Imaging and Therapeutics Research Laboratory at Georgia Tech which focuses on the translation of diagnostic imaging, therapeutic instrumentation, and nanobiotechnology for clinical applications. He holds an appointment at the Emory University School of Medicine, where he is affiliated with Winship Cancer Institute, Department of Radiology, and other clinical units. In the course of his work, Emelianov has pioneered several ultrasound-based imaging techniques, including shear wave elasticity imaging and molecular photoacoustic imaging.
