Inspired by a desire to connect with the terrain in which we live, our current focus rests upon the ubiquitous vibrations that surround and ground us, but are imperceptible among the bustle and noise of human activity. We seek to create the space to interact with and bring awareness to these vibrations and explore the sound worlds beneath the surface. Using “Geofons,” microphones designed to capture subsonic tremors in the soil, such as those created by tunneling organisms, tectonic activity, a leaf falling, or an airplane passing overhead, we record these vibrations and use them as the generative basis for composition and improvisation, ultimately producing what we conceive as “geophonic prints,” impressions and reflections of the obscure acoustics within the Earth.
