There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Language is political, hotly contested, always evolving, and deeply personal to all people who choose the terms with which they identify themselves. To show respect and awareness of these complexities, it is important to be attentive to language and to honor and use individuals’ self-referential terms.
What identity terms do we find appropriate and use for ourselves and for others? What transgender and non-binary pronouns and expressions are already available in English and languages other than English? Which pronouns do people use to indicate their trans* or non-binary identity? How can we use “they”, “she/they,” “he/they” in foreign-language classrooms?
