Dhongde joined "The Real Story" host Ritula Shah with panelists Poonam Muttreja, executive director of the Population Foundation of India, and Colette Rose, a sociologist and researcher at the Berlin Institute for Population and Development. Their 49-minute conversation revolved around the challenges and opportunities for India as the world's population reached 8 billion people this month.
Along with investments in infrastructure, the government also needs to invest in human capital, Dhongde said.
“The country has, as you mentioned, very high unemployment rates, especially among the youth,” Dhongde told Shah. “How are we going to address that question, right? Are we imparting them the adequate skills? Are we letting labor migration move freely across the country or even between countries? What are the types of skills that the youth will need coming forward?”
Dhongde also emphasized the importance of educating the next generation of Indian youth as the country’s population continues to grow.
