Chinese President Xi Jinping has further consolidated his power at the recently concluded 20th Party Congress. At this historical meeting, he also declared that China will build a powerful nuclear force. Over the last few years, China has abandoned its traditionally modest and self-restrained nuclear doctrine and has embarked on a path to significantly expand its military nuclear power, with an aim to reshape China's strategic relationship with the United States.
At the same time, China and Russia are engaged in increasingly close strategic military cooperation, including collaboration on missile defense and early warning capabilities, as well as more frequent joint patrols by strategic bombers. Taking advantage of the intensified great power competition, North Korea has resumed long-range missile tests and is swiftly developing both strategic and tactical nuclear capabilities.
The evolving geostrategic landscape in Asia also adds uncertainty to the nuclear competition between India and Pakistan. The presenter will analyze the trends and the underlying driving forces of the nuclear dynamics in Asia, discuss the implications for international peace and regional stability, and offer thoughts on future measures to manage the consequences.
