Global Development Week 2022Georgia Tech is celebrating Global Development Week this year with a week-long series of events in connection with the launch of Georgia Tech’s new Master of Science in Global Development, a degree dedicated to educating the next generation of global development leaders.
The new degree is jointly offered by School of Economics and the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, both units of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, and the School of City and Regional Planning — a unit of the College of Design.
The week kicks off on Oct. 24 with several events dedicated to the Institute’s commitment to solving the most pressing issues — from health to sustainability — outlined in the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Accords that affect communities around the world.
“All of us here in Ivan Allen College and the College of Design are excited about the doors this new degree will open for our graduate students. Our year-long curriculum will provide them with the skills they need to help guide just and sustainable growth in developing nations worldwide. This week's events are a great introduction to the program and the vitally important role graduates can play in shaping our future,” said Shatakshee Dhongde, associate professor of Economics.

In April, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents approved the Master of Science in Global Development, a new degree created in response to the shortage of development professionals around the world. Students will gain the necessary skills to address the challenges faced by emerging regions around the world and to build sustainable futures for cities.
“The launch of the new interdisciplinary master’s degree in global development deepens Georgia Tech’s work to prepare graduates who contribute to solving the world’s challenges in rapid urbanization, economic development, and climate adaptation,” said Bruce Stiftel, professor emeritus of city and regional planning. “This interdisciplinary program draws our campus closer together while advancing Georgia Tech’s position as a global leader.”
The first cohort begins classes in Fall 2023.
