I still remember one time I was on campus during the summer and tried to go to Junior’s after their summer hours were over. Tommy saw me at the door, let me in, and served me after they were closed.

On the day I asked my wife to marry me, I got Junior’s Grill to go, and we ate on the top of Brittain Tower. After finishing our tenders baskets, we walked over to Tech Tower, climbed up behind the neon letters, and I popped the question. I’m glad that Tommy and crew were part of that special day for Lauren Weatherly McDow and me!

Tommy and Anne both knew what food I liked, so they’d call and let me know when my favorites showed up on the menu. I’d get back from a morning meeting and there would be a message saying something like, “Sandi, we’ve got buttered spinach today!”

When I was an architecture student, we’d been working all night on our projects. When it was clear there was no way we were going to finish before class, we hiked over to Junior’s. I never had ordered the French toast before and couldn’t believe the amount of sugar, syrup and whatever else passed for sweetener that was piled on there. We went to jury with our projects unfinished but full. As an employee, I ordered anything with bacon on it — and they didn’t skimp on the bacon.

Countless relationships were forged, fostered, and ultimately flourished while sipping sweet tea in a booth in “my other office.” Nine years ago, before Junior’s started staying open in the evenings, I was picked up in the Ramblin’ Wreck at the Student Center and driven to Junior’s for a surprise, after-hours, 50th birthday celebration — what a sweet memory!
