The Digital Media faculty awarded Aditya Anupam, Ph.D. DM 2021, the 2021 Best Dissertation Award for his thesis "Situated at a Distance: A Framework for Teaching Reflexive Inquiry through Digital Games."

In his dissertation, Anupam outlines an approach to help educators design digital games for teaching science and engineering. He highlights the potential for digital games to teach problem-solving skills in STEM classrooms and beyond, connecting STEM education, media studies, game studies, and science and technology studies.

Nassim Parvin, associate professor in LMC, served as the primary advisor on Anupam’s dissertation committee. Further committee members included Janet Murray, distinguished professor in LMC; Anne Sullivan, assistant professor in LMC; Jay Bolter, associate professor in LMC; and Donna Riley, Kamyar Haghighi Head of the School of Engineering Education at Purdue University.

Anupam previously published articles in Learning, Media, and Technology; IEEE Transactions on Education; and Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction. He also presented at conferences including 4S, the Connected Learning Summit, and ACM TAPIA, where he received the award for the best presentation on his dissertation as part of the doctoral consortium.

Anupam will continue this research as a postdoctoral fellow with the Design and Social Justice Studio, working with Parvin on research projects at the intersection of feminist ethics, design education, and engineering practice.
