Varun Roy and Vignesh Sreedhar, two student researchers in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, took home the Outstanding Paper Award at the 20th Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union. Roy, a rising fourth-year aerospace engineering major and international affairs minor, and Sreedhar, a rising third-year computer science major, won for their paper, titled, “The EU’s Capacity to Lead the Transatlantic Alliance to Establish ‘Ethical and Secure’ AI: Last Hope, Best Hope?”

The paper, which will now be published, is part of a larger research project that focuses on the European Union’s approach to regulating artificial intelligence. Roy and Sreedhar serve as research assistants on the project to Vicki Birchifield, professor and co-director of the Center for European and Transatlantic Studies in the Nunn School.

The Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union is the oldest and largest academic conference in the U.S. for undergraduate students focusing on European relations. The event is hosted by the European Union Center of California at Scripps College.
