Ph.D. student Daniel Aum is the first person from the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs to receive the Rosenthal Fellowship.
Daniel AumDaniel Aum, a Ph.D. student in International Affairs, Science, and Technology, has been awarded the Harold W. Rosenthal Fellowship in International Relations by the Partnership for Public Service. Aum is the first student from the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs to receive this fellowship, which offers students funding, placement in a congressional or executive branch office, and roundtable discussions during the summer. He is also a member of the summer 2022 cohort of Georgia Tech’s Federal Jackets Fellowship.
Aum will be serving as a fellow with the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee. He will help cover the Indo-Pacific region for the full committee while also serving with the subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, and nonproliferation. He anticipates participating in legislative development, press monitoring, writing speeches and memos, policy development, and more.
“I wanted to complement my academic training with more policy experience,” Aum said. “The committee is a great fit because it exercises oversight over many areas of U.S. foreign policy, including U.S. involvement in war, diplomacy, technology cooperation, development, and foreign aid – some of the key issues that we study at the Nunn School.”
In addition to his work on Capitol Hill, Aum looks forward to spending the summer with other Rosenthal Fellowship recipients from around the country who have an interest in public service. He also hopes that the policy experience he gains over the summer will help him further his research at Georgia Tech, which focuses on the intersection of great power competition, alliances, and innovation.
“I am excited to learn from a diverse group of service-oriented colleagues, who will bring their wide-ranging experiences to bear on major domestic and foreign policy challenges,” Aum said. “I am grateful to be awarded the prestigious Rosenthal fellowship and hope to help swarm the program with more Nunn School students in the future.
