Who had the greatest influence on your education and/or career path?
My mother and my aunt. I’m a first-generation college student. My family greatly encouraged me to take advantage of the value and opportunities in higher education.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I very much enjoy and appreciate the creativity and autonomy that teaching in higher education allows. From choosing materials to designing lessons, I strive to create lectures and assignments that are engaging and full of different ways for students to learn.
Why did you decide to teach at Georgia Tech, and what's the best part about working here?
A colleague (and friend) of mine encouraged me to apply when there was an opening! She said the work environment and the students were beyond compare, and she wasn’t mistaken. Both are wonderful! The students are absolutely the best part about working here.
What moment in Modern Languages/at Georgia Tech stands out as the most memorable?
The most memorable is probably the first year of the Seville, Spain, study abroad program. It’s a joy for me to share with my students a place that is so near and dear to my heart, and the first time doing so is something I’ll never forget.
What's your favorite course to teach and why?
Spanish TV Series is probably my favorite to date. It’s fun to teach because it has a little bit of everything — history, romance, mystery, adventure, foreign settings, and complex characters. Watching the students get excited about the story and all the history that goes with it is a real treat for me.
Do you have any advice for Modern Languages students at Georgia Tech?
Travel now. Travel the world. So many people wait to travel and then it never happens. Make it a part of your life!
When you're not working, what do you like to do?
I take a lot of long walks with my canine companion. I also like to frequent coffee shops with my husband, go to concerts and the symphony, and travel internationally.
If you weren't doing this, what would you be doing?
Something with animals, I’m sure. Perhaps wildlife rehabilitation.
