Janelle Owusu graduated with a B.S. in Public Policy in 2019, and shortly thereafter, she began her postgraduate education in pursuit of a law degree. Owusu shared more about her law studies and what life is like after graduating from Georgia Tech.
I am finishing up my last semester of law school at New York University! I was always pretty sure that I wanted to go to law school, and my time at Georgia Tech helped me solidify this.
I get to learn about all types of law, some of which I did not know existed before I came to school. I have gotten to take a variety of classes on topics including domestic violence, trusts and estates, digital currency, and fashion law.

My public policy education provided me with a base-level understanding of where laws come from and how they work. Almost all of my course exams at law school have had a section dedicated to discussing specific public-policy considerations of how the course’s topic impacts people.
I’m proud that I was able to get into law school in the first place! I am a first-generation student and American, so asking mom and dad for help along the way hasn’t necessarily been an option for me. I have met people — especially faculty and staff in the Law, Science, and Technology program — that extended grace to me and helped me think about going to law school, so I’m truly grateful for them.
I miss having access to a campus that truly was a bubble in the middle of a great city. New York City is loads of fun, but it was nice to have some level of separation from the city while being on campus as an undergraduate student.
Whenever you meet someone that is doing or working on something you might be interested in, talk to them! I truly owe a ton to the lawyers I met at Georgia Tech. People love to talk about what they are working on, and there is a lot to be learned from just listening to their stories.
Of course! Anyone who is wondering if they would want to go to law school can email me at janelle.owusu@law.nyu.edu.
