Career Trek at The Carter CenterIvan Allen College students explored careers in democracy and human rights at a recent trip to The Carter Center on Feb. 23. More than 25 students majoring in areas such as public policy and international affairs attended Career Trek, an event sponsored by the Georgia Tech Career Center that gives students an up-close look at various career paths.
“We hope students recognize President Carter’s leadership within the international arena and his commitment to transparency and human rights,” said Lauren Kent-Delany, director of educational programs at The Carter Center. “The quote, ‘My faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can with whatever I have to try to make a difference,’ from President Carter comes to mind.”
During the visit, the students toured the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum to learn more about Carter’s childhood, his life and service in Georgia as governor, and his time as 39th president of the United States.
“I really enjoyed getting a tour of the museum because I learned a lot about Jimmy Carter as a person, rather than just as the president,” said Natalie Hutchinson, an international affairs and modern languages major. “The tour provided a new perspective on the Carter Center, and I learned a lot about the Carter family as a whole.”
After the tour, students met with staff and gained insight about The Center’s internship program. Interns engage in international peacekeeping and humanitarian work through The Center’s health and peace programs. Others can support the Center’s daily operations as an intern.
“The Carter Center internship provides practical experience which complements the theoretical knowledge students gain in the classroom. This combination serves as a basis for interns to explore their career options and develop professional skills,” said Kent-Delany.
