The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs Paper CompetitionThe Sam Nunn School of International affairs has established three new research programs to reflect the strengths of our School’s faculty: (1) Program on Emerging Technologies and International Security (2) Program on International Affairs, Science and Technology and (3) Program on Global Development.
Each program is holding a paper competition in order to recognize high quality student research in each of these areas. We encourage submissions from students across the Institute, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Prizes will be awarded at the undergraduate and graduate levels, for each of the three programs. Winners will receive a $500 cash prize per paper.
Please submit a paper no later than March 31st, 2022 to one of following three programs listed below to Chris McDermott at chris.mcdermott@gatech.edu, making sure that your paper meets the following criteria:
Program Prompts:
1. The Nunn School Program on International Affairs, Science and Technology focuses on the ways that developments in science and technology affect international relations, as well as the way that international relations, organizations, and activities affect the development of science and technology. It includes issues related to energy, environment, information and communication, space, and other areas.
Papers should focus on topics in which developments in science and technology affect international relations, and/or situations in which international relations, organizations, and activities affect the development of science and technology. This may include papers that focus on issues related to energy, environment, information and communication, space, and other areas.
2. The Nunn School Program on Emerging Technology and International Security focuses on understanding the impact of emerging technologies on national and international security. It explores how advances in technologies, such as cyber capabilities, advances in hypersonic systems, artificial intelligence, biotech, autonomous systems, air defenses, and nanotechnology influence national defense and international security.
Papers should focus on topics related to emerging or disruptive technologies within the context of national and international considerations, such as conflict, escalation, cooperation, or strategic stability. Papers can examine a specific technology or look at the interaction between multiple technologies. Papers should also engage w
3. The Nunn School Program on Global Development focuses on reducing poverty and inequality, improving the socio-economic well-being of citizens across the globe and responding to the challenges of climate change and rapid urbanization.
Papers should focus on shedding light on key questions related to the field of Global Development, broadly defined. For example, papers in this area might seek to explain successes or failures of a given country or region with regard to achieving one or more of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Or, papers might shed light on the causes of a particular problem associated with poverty or deprivation and analyze potential solutions.
