Serious, Salty Trouble Is Brewing Under Antarctic Glaciers

*********************************
There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Antarctica's glaciers are under threat, but not in the way you’re thinking: The problem isn’t so much that the sun’s beating down on them, but that the warming sea is undercutting them. Two new studies offer results that show more warm seawater than previously thought eroding grounding lines, the divider between the glacial ice and where it rests on land and ocean. One of those studies was led by Alexander Robel, assistant professor in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, whose research team also found that warm seawater may be extending much farther past the grounding lines into the interior of glacial ice sheets. (Coverage of this research also appeared at Daily Kos.)
