The Linguistics Program in the School of Modern Languages hosted the North American Computational Linguistics Open (NACLO) Competition on Jan. 27. It is the first time Georgia Tech has served as a university site for the competition, which gives middle and high school students the opportunity to solve linguistics puzzles.

Nine local high school students participated in the open at Georgia Tech. The open round welcomes any interested middle and high school students to participate and introduces students to the disciplines of linguistics and computational linguistics.

The students’ scores in the open round are submitted to the NACLO national committee to determine who will advance to the invitational round. Winners of NACLO are eligible to compete in the International Linguistics Olympiad, one of twelve international high school science Olympiads.
