Tonga Volcanic Blast Sent Waves Across Georgia

John Trostel, director of GTRI’s Severe Storms Research Center, and his team recently detected infrasound waves from the massive volcanic explosion that rocked the Pacific Island nation of Tonga. Carried through the atmosphere, infrasound can travel thousands of miles without being dissipated, but can’t be heard by human ears because its frequency is too low. The SSRC is developing new ways to track tornadoes by detecting the infrasound they produce.
