There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Science fiction-like technology fixes for global warming like "solar geoengineering," which involve cooling off the planet by dumping vast amounts of chemicals into the upper atmosphere, could backfire with potentially disastrous side effects. So says Kim Cobb, Georgia Power Chair and ADVANCE Professor in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, and director of the Global Change Program. Cobb, who was a lead author on the recent UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report, writes in this op-ed (shared with colleague Michael E. Mann from Penn State University) that while "this is the time to apply bold, creative thinking to accelerate progress toward climate stability, this is not the time to play fast and loose with the planet, in service of any agenda, be it political or scientific in nature."
