There have always been attacks against science by those who felt that the sciences claim authority that threatens other forms of authority—be it religious, ideological, or commercial, including the fight of the tobacco industry to keep people smoking or of the fossil fuel industry against climate science. But what we saw in Donald Trump’s presidency was something more devastating for the future of democracy. The man claims to be the sole authority on fact and truth, and millions believe him. What does this mean for our work as scientists and educators?
