Former senator and namesake of the school, Sam Nunn, issued a statement through Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) on the passing of General Colin Powell last week. Nunn also was mentioned in a CBS 60 Minutes tribute to Powell at the end of the episode. The following is Senator Nunn's statement:

“General Colin Powell was a soldier’s soldier and an American hero. I was fortunate to work closely with Colin on a range of critical issues when he held senior military posts and civilian positions in our government. He had superb leadership skills and excellent judgment. He made significant contributions to our nation’s security and to bringing people together to strengthen America. Colin’s devotion to our young people and his leadership by example inspired our generation and will inspire generations to come. Colleen and I send our condolences and love to Alma and the Powell family.”
