Taboo to Civic Actions: Engaging Taiwanese Youth in Environmental Controversial Issues Discussions

Speaker: Yun-Wen Chen, Assistant Professor of Curriculum & Instruction, Texas State University

Abstract: In this talk, I will present a case study that I designed a curriculum to engage middle school students in discussions of a highly controversial wetland policy in Dacheng, Taiwan, a remote and underprivileged agricultural area. By leading youth to navigate tensions among contesting viewpoints between those who defend wetland conservation and those who support economic development, I examined how students changed their conceptions and how students conceptualized their roles as environmental citizens over time.
