Why is there uncertainty over when we might reach herd immunity?

There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Medical experts were hoping the Covid vaccines would help the U.S. reach herd immunity, but now there is uncertainty over what it will take to achieve it. Early in the pandemic, healthcare experts estimated we would need 60 to 70% of the U.S. population to have some form of immunity to stop the spread. M.G. Finn, professor and Chair, and James A. Carlos Family Chair for Pediatric Technology in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, said variants of the coronavirus have thrown a kink in the numbers game.
