As part of the Health Systems Seminar Series, Mark Cohen will lecture on "Clinical Integration Trust: Design of a Multiuse Data Repository to Facilitate the Improvement of Patient Care." Lunch will be served at noon.
Abstract:
With more than a hundred physicians, the Piedmont Heart Institute is the largest cardiology practice in the southeast. It operates from Piedmont’s four hospitals and more than 30 outpatient cardiovascular offices and is a key component of the Piedmont Clinic, an organization of more than 450 physicians. Managing and improving the quality of cardiovascular care is at the core of its mission. Doing this depends on collecting, aggregating, mining and visualizing information from many different sources: hospital, office, testing equipment, pharmacy, even the patient. With rare exceptions, health care systems do not have the integrated system or the analytical tools to absorb and assemble the data in a way that allows us to understand the data and then use it to improve patient care. In the absence of a single integrated system, a specialized secondary use system is necessary. The Clinical Integration Trust (CIT) is a robust general-purpose data system that is in use and is driving projects to improve the health and care of clinic patients. This presentation will discuss the specific design and program elements of the Piedmont CIT and those needed to create the subsystem for the Piedmont Heart Institute. It is anticipated that projects, whether driven by a specific need or those that are exploratory in nature, will directly benefit individual patients and doctors. Scholarly research will also be facilitated.
Speaker’s Bio:
Dr. Cohen holds a Ph.D. in biomathematical sciences. He received his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, completed his internal medicine residency at Parkland Hospital and completed his cardiology training at Washington University, Barnes Hospital. Dr. Cohen completed his fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology at Washington University Medical Center. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases and clinical cardiac electrophysiology. Dr. Cohen is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the Heart Rhythm Society. He has a particular interest in patient safety and quality. He has published numerous articles and participates in clinical research. He is currently an interventional cardiac electrophysiologist with the Piedmont Heart Institute Physicians.
