Kent Linthicum, Ph.D., is an American Council of Learned Societies fellow in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has appeared in Slate, The Atlantic, and various academic journals. Dr. Linthicum researches and teaches media, environmental studies, and climate change. He’s currently working on a book about the relationship between slavery and fossil fuels before the Civil War.
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges the world faces, and while there are more and more books, films, television shows, and video games that mention climate change, media representations of environmental justice are hard to find. This talk will go over the history of environmental justice and its representations in popular media, looking at works like Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower, N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth Trilogy, the Game of Thrones series, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Battlefield 2042, Civilization 6, and other media.
