Alex Fedorov received the best student paper award at the IEEE International Conference on Health Informatics, which was held August 9-12 in a virtual format. 

The title of Fedorov’s award-winning paper is "Self-Supervised Multimodal Domino: in Search of Biomarkers for Alzheimer’s Disease.” Single brain-imaging modalities provide only a limited view of an extremely complex organ. By using complex relations between modalities, Fedorov and his colleagues can create powerful self-supervised predictive models. This paper represents a promising step towards advancing Fedorov’s and his colleagues’ search for missing links in complex brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. 

Fedorov is a Ph.D. student in the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and is a member of the Center for Translational Research in Neuroimaging and Data Science (TRENDS). His advisor is Vince Calhoun, who leads the TRENDS Center, which is based at Georgia State University, Georgia Tech, and Emory University. Calhoun is a professor in ECE and a Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar.

In addition to Calhoun, Fedorov's coauthors on the paper are Tristan Sylvain, of the Mila-Quebec AI Institute and the Université of Montréal; Eloy Geenjaar, of the TRENDS Center and the Delft University of Technology; Margaux Luck, of the Mila-Quebec AI Institute; Lei Wu, Thomas P. DeRamus, and Sergey Plis, all of Georgia State and the TRENDS Center; and Alex Kirilin and Dmitry Bleklov, who are independent researchers.
