In April 2017, the Strategic Energy Institute partnered with Southern Company, Siemens, and the Bipartisan Policy institute to host the INTERSECT: Energy, Policy, and Innovation Conference. Approximately 200 leaders in the energy industry attended the event, including former U. S. Department of Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, and participated in panel discussions which presented perspectives on approaches to developing clean, reliable and affordable power in the U.S.

As a follow-up to the conference Public Utilities Fortnightly, a trade publication that targets energy industry professionals, featured an interview with Tim Lieuwen and Rich Simmons to further discuss the motivation behind the event and future plans for the Strategic Energy Institute.
