The Urban Naturalist Certificate Program is open to all college/university students with a student email address. This free virtual weekend workshop is designed for students interested in Natural Resource Management and Conservation. Students will listen to webinars led by faculty and local leaders in urban conservation. To obtain the certificate, students need to attend all four modules over two days, as detailed below.

Saturday, May 15th:

Module 1: Apiculture

  • Supporting honeybees in urban environments (Dr. Jennifer Leavey, Georgia Tech)
  • Virtual Urban Beehive Tour (Reggie Davis and Tyree Thornton: Fulton County Master Gardeners, Truth Honey)

Module 2: Urban Agriculture

  • Reckoning, repair, and regeneration: A case for the need to move beyond “sustainable” (Dr. Bradford Baker, Georgia Tech)
  • Growing greenhouse mushrooms (Michael Blackwell, Kennesaw State University)

Sunday, May 16th:

Module 3: Urban Wildlife

  • Who calls Georgia Tech home? Wildlife on Campus (Dr. Emily Weigel, Georgia Tech)
  • Tracking foxes at Georgia Tech (Benjamin Seleb, Georgia Tech)

Module 4: Resource Conservation and Climate Management

  • Examining our heat island with Climate Lab (Dr. Evan Mallen, Georgia Tech)
  • Man-made wetlands and their role in urban water conservation, followed by a virtual tour of the Johns Creek Environmental Center Water Treatment Facility (Kelli Edwards, Fulton County Public Works)
