Fabian WIlliamsAtlanta artist Fabian Williams is creating a mural along Tech Walkway this spring that reflects the diverse vibrancy of the Georgia Tech community. The effort to bring Williams to campus was conceived and led by Sinet Adous, a fourth-year International Affairs major, whose work for the past two years to bring Williams to campus includes finding project funding and gathering student input for what the community would like to see represented in the mural through campus-wide surveys.
Adous said she hopes the mural will be a reflection of the diversity and spirit of Georgia Tech, reinvigorating students’ love and excitement for Georgia Tech after a year that has felt very distanced. The mural will be painted on the low brick wall in front of the Skiles building across from the Starbucks in Clough. She said students are eager to see more art like this on campus.
Adous first got the idea for an on-campus mural after working with Living Walls Atlanta, an organization that creates public art displays across the metro area, during her second year at Tech. She then met with Georgia Tech Arts, obtained approval for the project from Georgia Tech administration and various departments, and secured funding from the Mental Health Joint Allocation Committee in the Student Government Association.
She and a student design group, which includes Lisa Medford, Alivia Rukmana, Sara Pierson, Adam Lederer, and Jathan Caldwell, have met with the artist this year to present the results of the student surveys and bring together ideas for the piece.
Fabian Williams has created many well-known murals across the city of Atlanta, including murals that feature iconic civil right figures such as Hosea Williams, Coretta Scott King, Colin Kaepernick, and many others.
