Prof. Todd Michney is looking to employ an undergraduate research assistant this summer.  The work project is to transcribe the names, locations, and employment of all known Tuskegee Institute alumni as of 1926, converting this information from a 100-page oversized ledger to an Excel spreadsheet (I have a PDF made from snapshots I took in the Tuskegee Archives).  Founded in 1881, Tuskegee is the best-known HBCU (Historically Black College or University), and was led from the late 19th to the early 20th century by the country’s most prominent African American leader at the time, Booker T. Washington.

Having access to a large computer monitor or dual screens is highly recommended; once the transcribing is finished, the work will shift to checking the ProQuest Historic African American Newspapers database for any mentions of the individuals named.  All HSOC majors are welcome to apply; please write an email indicating interest (include resumé) to:  todd.michney@hsoc.gatech.edu

  • Appointment dates: 5/16/21 - 6/26/21 (six weeks, appointment can start sooner based on availability)
  • Compensation: $12 to $14 per hour (based on experience)
  • Up to 10 hours per week (OPTIONAL: possibility for more hours, dependent on progress of research work)
