There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Abstract
In this thesis proposal, a novel robotic architecture, Baby, for robotic babies is proposed with a systems engineering design approach. A robotic baby is an autonomous learning system with minimal structures at the beginning of its life, aiming to gradually learn languages and actions from interactions with human parents and the world. A systems engineering design approach ensures the proper high-level requirement definition, subsystem implementation and system-level integration and validation. Throughout the proposal, the philosophy and the reasoning behind a robotic baby with a systems engineering design approach is discussed. With the architecture, system verification and validation are conducted, which show convincing language skills in parsing, similar to observed human cognitive behaviors. A proof-of-concept demonstration involving an integration with a 3D printer is also presented. With preliminary results, the roadmap for further development and the positioning of the robotic architecture are presented.
