Education and Outreach Intern
Stipend $1,250

Who We Are: The Atlanta Community Food Bank is working to end hunger in our community by engaging, educating and empowering our community. Since 1979, we’ve been providing food for a growing network of nonprofit partners – including food pantries, community kitchens, child care centers, night shelters and senior centers. We currently serve more than 700 partners in 29 counties across metro Atlanta and north Georgia.

Where You’ll Work: Education and Outreach Intern will work primarily with the Education and Outreach team within the Marketing and Public Affairs Department of the Atlanta Community Food Bank. This will be a hybrid position where most of the time is spent working remotely. There will be times where support out in the community is needed.

About the Role: The Education and Outreach Intern will enhance our ability to provide quality educational programming and provide support to the Food Bank’s education and outreach efforts, including our hunger education and our summer youth programming. The Education and Outreach Intern will interface with Hunger 101 constituents, youth participants, and other key Food Bank staff.

What You’ll Do:
Functional Area #1: Summer Youth Program Support and Assistant Facilitation

  • Help plan and prepare for 2 Youth Summit programs and 3 Youth Service Days
  • Provide logistical support
  • Provide group facilitation support
  • Help with photo documentation and storytelling
  • Help with data collection and final reporting

Functional Area #2: Education and Outreach Program Support

  • Help update and develop educational materials and tools.
  • Research and outreach.

What You’ll Need:
Education/Certification

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and an interest in hunger and poverty issues, community education and building stronger, food secure communities.
  • Pursuing a college degree is a plus.

Skills and Experience

  • Must enjoy and have experience working with kids and teens.
  • Strong written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software.
  • Experience with Google Suite, a plus.
  • Must be a self-starter and comfortable working remotely.
  • Experience with virtual meeting platforms like Zoom or Google Meets is necessary.
  • Organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to work independently, with or without supervision.
  • Ability to collaborate and work well with a diverse group of people.
  • Personal transportation is necessary

  • Have experience and enjoy helping others and/or volunteering in your community.

  • You are by nature - a quick learner, detail oriented and have super organizational skills;
  • You have an interest in careers that involve education, engaging the community, working with youth, or program development.

Time Requirements

There are several weeks where dates and hours are required. Outside of those times, there is flexibility. Please review this timeline carefully before applying. Internship will begin the week of Monday, May 24th, 2021.

  • May 24th-May 28th: Flexible- Orientation and training (10-15 hours)
  • May 31st - May 4th: Flexible-Prep for Youth Learn and Serve Days (15-20 hours) *Food Bank is closed May 31st.
  • June 7th-June 11th: Flexible for Youth Programs prep but Youth Learn and Serve Day #1 (Wed-Thur 6/9-6/10) are mandatory (up to 6 hours each YLSD day for a total of 12-20 hours)
  • June 14th- June 19th: Flexible for Youth Programs prep but Youth Learn and Serve Days #2 (Wed-Thur 6/16-6/17) and #3 (Fri-Sat 6/18-6/19) are mandatory (up to 6 hours each YLSD day for a total of 24-30 hours)
  • June 21st - June 25th: Flexible for Youth Programs prep but Youth Service Summit (Tues-Thur 6/22-6/24) are mandatory (up to 8 hours for each YSS day for a total of 24-30 hours) ● June 28th - July 2nd: Flexible (10-15 hours)
  • July 5th - July 9th: Flexible (10-15 hours) *Food Bank is closed July 5th.
  • July 12th - July 16th: Flexible (10-15 hours)
  • July 19th - July 23rd: Youth Leadership Summit (Tues-Fri 7/20-7/23) is mandatory (up to 40 hours)
  • July 26th - July 30th: LAST WEEK- Flexible (10-15 hours)

Opportunities to Learn
In order to gain a full understanding of the Food Bank and our scope of work, intern will volunteer in a variety of program areas including, but not limited to:

  • ACFB Hunger Action Center
  • FoodWell Alliance Community Gardens
  • At least one of our partner agencies
  • Participate in a cooking class or demo with our Nutrition and Wellness team.

Education and Outreach Intern will also participate in the following educational experiences:

  • Participate in Food Bank’s educational workshops.
  • Read or participate and reflect on 1-2 selected articles or webinars related to hunger and food security issues.
  • Learn about our 3 policy priorities and federal nutrition programs.

Education and Outreach Intern will gain:

  • In depth understanding of local and national hunger and poverty issues.
  • Strong grasp of community and government responses to hunger and poverty.
  • Opportunity to build or strengthen groups facilitation and leadership skills.
