Summary Sentence: Help Launch Startups based on the $1B+ Research at Georgia Tech

Full Summary:

Students can leverage Georgia Tech research patents to envision startups and receive cash awards

Georgia Tech conducts more than $1 Billion in research each year. At the same time, students are making an impact with their own research in programs like CREATE-X and VentureLab. In Georgia Tech’s latest hackathon, students can go one step farther and harness Georgia Tech research innovation and apply it to solve problems. The Hackathon will be a weekend event taking place virtually on April 9-11, 2021, with winners announced April 12.  Over the weekend, students will:
  • Access curated intellectual property to propose an application and its importance
  • Compete to win the top team cash prize of $5,000 with second and third place teams winning $3,000 and $2,000, respectively*
  • Gain an opportunity to be selected to participate in Startup Launch if selected a winner, based on the viability of the proposal and additional funding
Georgia Tech students across all majors, including recent alumni from Spring 2018 to present, are encouraged to participate. Technical and non-technical students are both encouraged to apply, as the competition is more on the business-use case of applying the technology. Register today for the hackathon and view the list now of intellectual property available (which may be supplemented in the coming weeks).  A link to the list will also be in the registration confirmation email. *Cash prizes will only be given to current students Contact rahulsaxena@gatech.edu with any questions you may have!   Register Today!

Georgia Tech does $1B+ in research expenditures every year and is one of the top research universities in the world. The research develops several world-class technologies from new machine learning algorithms to better batteries. For the first time ever, Georgia Tech is making its technologies available to students so that they can envision what amazing startups can be launched based on them.

The $1B+ Startup Hackathon will be a weekend event taking place virtually April 9-11, 2021, with winners announced on April 12th.  Quick information about the hackathon:

  • Students will have access to a curated set of Georgia Tech patents
  • Propose one or more commercial applications for the patent(s)
  • The deliverable is a 5-minute video about the application(s)
  • The winning team will receive a cash prize of $5,000. The second and third place prizes will be $3,000 and $2,000, respectively
  • The winning teams will also go through a fast-tracked selection process for a spot in CREATE-X Startup Launch

The hackathon is open to all Georgia Tech students (both undergrad and grad) across all majors. Both technical and non-technical students are encouraged to participate, as the competition is more on the application of technology to launch a viable startup.
