Reginald DesRoches, the provost at Rice University, will speak about “The 10 C’s of Academic Leadership.” DesRoches is a leader in academia and a nationally recognized expert on earthquake resilience. In addition to his role as the chief academic officer at Rice, DesRoches serves as a professor of civil and environmental engineering and mechanical engineering. He joined Rice University as the dean of the George R. Brown School of Engineering in 2017 after leaving Georgia Tech, where he was the Karen and John Huff Chair of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His primary research interests are in design of resilient infrastructure systems under extreme loads and the application of smart materials. DesRoches served as the key technical leader in the United States’ response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake, taking a team of 28 engineers, architects, city planners and social scientists to study the impact of the earthquake.
