Title: Dynamic State Estimation Based Protection of Power Electronic System
Committee:
Dr. Meliopoulos, Advisor
Dr. Saeedifard, Chair
Dr. Grijalva
Abstract: The objective of the proposed research is to establish an estimation-based protection (EBP) scheme for power electronic systems. Unlike the existing protection functions of power electronic systems, the EBP utilizes every available measurement and is supposed to detect all relevant faults inside the protection zone without the coordination of other relays. The proposed EBP is based on the quasi-dynamic domain device model to realize real-time operation. The data collected from the merging unit is transformed into dynamic phasor form before the state estimation algorithm is implemented and the protective decision is made based on the confidence level obtained from the state estimation. The EBP is supposed to show better selectivity and sensitivity compared to existing protection methods.
