Few took notice when a fledgling electric-vehicle startup with a brash Elon Musk as CEO went public in the summer of 2010 at a valuation of $2.24 billion. Fast forward to early 2021, and Tesla is valued at some $800 trillion, which marks an appreciation of roughly 36,000%. Although Tesla made only 500,000 vehicles in 2020, it is more valuable than the legacy carmakers such as Toyota, Volkswagen, GM, and Ford combined, producing over 25 million cars in the same year. What is more, most major car companies are now fully committed to an all-electric future. How did Tesla accomplish such a dramatic industry transformation? How will it play out?
