Institute Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Georgia Tech’s ADVANCE Program offer 90-minute implicit bias workshops designed for faculty.

As of October 2016, the Institute established the requirement that all faculty who serve on reappointment, promotion, and/or tenure committees and faculty search committees are required to participate in an Implicit Bias (IB) workshop. Faculty should refresh their IB training every four years. If you have participated in an Implicit Bias workshop during the past four years (Spring 2016 - Fall 2020), you are exempt from this requirement and will not need to participate again until after Spring 2021 at the earliest (depending upon the semester and year of previous training). (Research faculty are welcome to attend as space permits. Additional workshops for non-tenure track faculty and staff will be announced in January, 2021.)

The goals of these workshops are to increase awareness of the impact of implicit bias and to facilitate equitable decision-making across myriad processes related to faculty evaluations.

The goals of these workshops are to increase awareness of the impact of implicit bias and to facilitate equitable decision-making across myriad processes related to faculty evaluations.

As a participant in the workshop, you will learn the following:

  • An introduction to the concept of implicit bias and how these unconscious, automatic mental processes may impact behaviors such as evaluating candidates during faculty search and/or RPT processes.
  • Empirical research on vitaes, letters of recommendations, and teaching evaluations to illustrate the impact of implicit bias on decisions.
  • Effective practices and strategies for faculty search and RPT committees.

Click here to learn more and/or register for a workshop. A reminder email with BlueJeans meeting information will be sent to all registrants prior to each workshop.

Note for GTRI faculty ONLY: GTRI Research Faculty should register for a GTRI Implicit Bias workshop, via Quest LMS. For assistance, please contact TMD, Sarah Cockrell (sarah.cockrell@gtri.gatech.edu) or Course Facilitator Monique Johnson (Monique.johnson@gtri.gatech.edu) for assistance.
