The Wesley Foundation at Georgia Tech sponsors the 2011 Landiss Lecture Series: "The Wonder of It All: The Bible, Creation, and Science."

Lecture 2: "The Genesis Code: The Origin of Creation"

About the speaker:
This lecture series features Dr. William P. (Bill) Brown, Professor of Old Testament, Columbia Theological Seminary, and author of the book, "The Seven Pillars of Creation: The Bible, Science, and the Ecology of Wonder."  In the book, Dr. Brown seeks to illuminate both connections and conflicts between the ancient creation traditions and the natural sciences. In so doing, he argues for a new way of reading the Bible in light of current scientific knowledge and with consideration of the needs of the environment. Dr. Brown claims that both scientific inquiry and theological reflection are driven by a sense of wonder, which, in his words, "unites the scientist and the psalmist."

Dr. Brown will deliver a total of five lectures. The first four take place on Tuesday afternoons, and focus on the seven texts that Dr. Brown discusses in his book. The fifth lecture happens on a Tuesday evening, during which he will discuss what insights the ancient biblical texts have for us in terms of our understanding of, and responsibility to, the environment in our modern context.

The public is invited to all lectures.

About the lecture series:
The Landiss Lecture Series was created in memory of Charles William “Bill” Landiss, director of the Wesley Foundation at Georgia Tech from 1962 to 1996. For 34 years, Bill’s vision for the Wesley Foundation was that it be a community on the Georgia Tech campus dedicated to “asking the value question in science and technology.” This lecture series was created to continue his legacy of critical and thoughtful inquiry. Previous speakers include authors J. Philip Wogaman ("Making Moral Decisions"), Huston Smith ("Why Religion Matters"), Marva Dawn ("Unfettered Hope"), Harvey Cox ("When Jesus Came to Harvard"), and Stephen Prothero ("Religious Literacy").
