Lorna Rivera - PEARC22The Practice and Experience in Advanced Research Computing (PEARC) Conference Series has welcomed Lorna Rivera onto the PEARC22 team as General Co-Chair. Rivera, Research Scientists at the Center for Education Integrating Mathematics, Science, and Computing (CEISMC), received a formal nomination to join the team alongside her colleague, Julie Wernert from Indiana University Bloomington.
Established in 2017, The PEARC Conference provides participants in the research computing community with a chance to discuss challenges, opportunities, and unique solutions regarding education and computing industries. By building off of the success of the past, the PEARC conference aims to grow to be more inclusive to fit the interest of the developing community.
Attendees of the conference include students, researchers, scientists, systems professionals and more. In the past, PEARC17 hosted 581 attendees, PEAR18 hosted 639 attendees, and PEARC20 hosted 1,000 attendees online this July.
Each year, the conference focuses on broad themes. Past themes have included “Seamless Creativity” and “Sustainability, Success and Impact” which aim to meet the needs of the computing community. With her new position, Rivera hopes to incorporate her 10 years of research experience to meet the goals of the 2022 event. Rivera has noticed the need for research computing professionals and hopes to look toward equity and inclusion as a critical solution.
“I am also very committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion which I and my co-chair, Julie Wernert, plan to make a central component of this conference,” said Rivera.
As General Co-Chair, Rivera will oversee all activity of the Conference Committee. Additional responsibilities include serving as a member of the PEARC Steering Committee, communicating between the Conference Committee and the Steering Committee, and ensuring that conference activities are correctly planned and implemented.
“On a personal level I look forward to gaining experience in planning an event of this size and scope,” said Rivera. “More broadly, I look forward to helping the community grow in meaningful ways to better address critical issues.”
Overall, the conference will aim to approach current and future industry challenges through evidence-based solutions and will build on current discussions regarding diversity and inclusion.
