There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Here is a brief summary of Jon's research on: Clostridial strain degeneration: new approaches to an old problem
Solventogenic Clostridia offer an attractive alternative for the production of biofuels through their unique metabolism. An intrinsic problem with these bacteria is their tendency to degenerate which is characterised by a reduction or complete loss in solvent and endospore formation which occurs when the bacteria are repeatedly subcultured. A greater understanding of this phenomenon is needed to overcome the problems it poses to industry. Here we used a combination of genetic, ecological and evolutionary approaches to understand the process of degeneration more thoroughly to ultimately control the process of strain degeneration in industrial applications.
