Speakers: Dr. Margaret Renwick and soon-to-be-Dr. Joey Stanley, University of Georgia Department of Linguistics

Description: Margaret Renwick and Joey Stanley use a large corpus of historical audio recordings to explore the English spoken in Georgia over the past one hundred years, through its transition from a rural state mostly inhabited by American-born people to an urbanizing state home to people from all over the country and the world. How have these changes affected the linguistic landscape of Georgia, including its iconic "Southern accent"?  This research relates to the study of language, sociology, data science, and globalization.

Part of the Workshop on Language, Technology, and Society generously sponsored by the Institute for People and Technology, the GVU Center, and the Atlanta Global Studies Center
