2020 is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day around the world. Georgia Tech has been hosting an Earth Day festival for 22 years. Each year a contest is opened for design submissions that encompass the theme of the event. Earth Day 2020 is centered on Local Action. Global Impact.

This year’s winner is Mariam Marzouk. Mariam is a senior Computer Science major with an interest in art & design and passion for the environment. When asked about her piece Mariam said, “In coming up with the design, I wanted to capture the relationship between personal environmental stewardship and the global health of communities and the earth. Planting and tending the soil are concrete local actions that can have a broad global impact, especially in the context of the climate crisis. Conventional industrial agriculture has led to the loss of arable land, the pollution of waterways, desertification, and a host of other environmental and social problems.”

Mariam understood the meaning and importance of our theme stating, “To combat this, we must collectively build, develop, and deploy sustainable alternatives. Small-scale community farms and permaculture are great examples of this, but most important is that we each recognize and remember our deep, undeniable connection to the land, and the personal responsibility we have to care for the earth and thus, each other.” We are encourage and excited by Mariam, it is up to all of us to work locally to make a global impact.

Earth Day is a time to remind of the progress we have made and current opportunities to protect the environment. Join us to celebrate Earth Day on April 17, 2020 from 10 am to 2pm at Tech Green.

The festival will feature a recycling drop off center, clothing swap, repurposing crafts, health & wellness activities, and information from numerous on and off campus resources.
